Bharat Biotech: The Leading Light in the Vaccine Development Programme

Bharat Biotech: The Leading Light in the Vaccine Development Programme

The world is in the midst of the gravest danger that humanity has not witnessed for the longest duration of time. Although the mortality rate has not been alarming and has varied from one country to another, the fact that a second wave of the virus is incoming has spread fear among the masses.

The current COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented, but the worldwide response draws on the teachings learned from other disease outbreaks over the past several decades. Over more than 100 vaccine candidates are in various stages of development and testing. This process usually takes years. Researchers are speeding it up the maximum amount as they will, and a few vaccines are already in late-stage trials. While some say we could have a vaccine by year’s end, others predict it'll be longer to make sure that the vaccine works, is safe, and may be distributed widely.

All the developed and developing economies across the world have put their laboratory facilities to test and have instructed their scientists to ensure that a vaccine for the virus is developed as soon as possible. European University of Infectious Diseases, Oxford University in collaboration with major medicine manufacturer AstraZeneca has been the leading the vaccine discovery program with their vaccine going through a rigorous clinical trial of stage 3 with close to 30,000 samples being tested daily.

An association of countries have joined an agreement in the form of Covax, which is collusion, or a cartel of countries formed to organize and enhance the speed and efficacy of the vaccine research program. Leading countries in the world including India, China and the United States of America are a part of the Covax program.

India which is among the most affected countries in Novel Coronavirus and is considered to be one of the hotspot regions has been in the race for the clinical trials of the Covid Vaccine, named Covaxin. This particular vaccine has been manufactured by the Indian pharmaceutical giant Bharat Biotech in active collaboration with Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR).

The vaccine is currently in its second human trials stage and is being tested on a sample of around 1000 people. With no active comorbidities being reported initially, there is hope that the vaccine might prove to be effective shortly, as has been reported by the directors and the manufacturing department chiefs of the organization.

Moreover, active collaboration with the body of the infectious disease of our country has also enhanced the opportunity to ensure that the vaccine is effective against the symptoms that people generally contract when they come across this highly repetitive virus genome that can not only replicate at a quick pace but also change its composition according to the specific environment and room temperature. The body has been working with countries in Eastern Europe, Asia and Central Asia. But this information is not being disclosed due to privacy concerns about the virus.

Sai Prasad, Executive Director dropped a statement that the unit is working on the process and is in active discussions with more than 10 countries that have shown an interest in COVAXIN. Adding on, they are also in discussion to some of the countries about partnerships to conduct clinical trial and introduce the vaccine, and is some countries, they are in talks to manufacture the vaccine locally.

Conclusion

Thus, in conclusion, we can very well say that the world is looking forward to the production and distribution of vaccines that will be produced by Bharat Biotech as it will only be effective once it is made to pass through several layers of acute human testing. Till then the human race has to be aware, use proper socialization barriers and proper sanitizing measures and masks to ensure that the spread of the virus can be restricted minimally if not stopped completely.
